In Depth Analysis of Step Brothers Opening Title Sequence

Genre

The genre is first hinted when Columbia pictures title is presented. it's font makes it look hand written as well as childish. This has been done to reflect on the characters personality and how they are presented. The way in which it relates to the genre is that it is a comedy convention, a man which is presented as a child.

Narrative

The opening shot is of a quote 'Family's where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream.' This quote gives us a hint about the narrative which connotes that the film is centred around a family. Two single elderly parents get together and they both have sons which still live at home and are about 40 years old.

Characters

The first shot of a character is a close up on brendens hand while he is making cheesy natsocs. this tells us that he is the protagonist or one of the protagonists of the film as he is presented first. brenden is presented as childish. this is because he is making a snack which is commonly eaten and make by teenagers. as well as this he has a bowl of cerial and a blue fizzy drink. these are common sterotypes of a teenager/ child. The obnormal amount of food represents the common characteristic of a teenagers cravings for food and the blue fizzydrink is a soft drink which is commonly drunk by young people. a sterotypical drink for an adult would be something healthy or a beer  for a 40 year old male. He is also wearing pyjamas which is sterotypically only worn by young children. all of this shows us that brenden is presented as a child.

the second character which is introduced is the second protagonist of the film Dale. he is first introduced sniffing dirty clothes. this is something which would be commonly seen by a teenager. he is next seen playing a video game wearing casual teenage clothes. Dale shouts at his dad 'thats not enough dad' referring to his dad not giving him enough money for a side order for pizza. This represents a characteristic of a teenager showing his bad temper and cravings for food. 

Then we are presented with Brendens mother. she is wearing smart clothes and is heading off when we first see her. she says to Dale, while he is watching TV barely listening to what she is saying, 'I'll be home about 11'. this suggests that Brenden lives with his mom. The way she is speaking to him sounds like she is directing it to a teenage boy not an adult. This again shows the comedic aspect of an adult shown as a child. After this we are introduced with Dale's dad. he is wearing a suit and is in a hurry which suggests that he is off to work however Dale is wearing casual clothes and playing a game. This suggests that he doesn't have a job, which makes him not a usual adult and more childlike.

Sound

As the film opening starts we first hereis the diagetic sound of the rustling some nachos. the atmosphere created by this brings a casual, welcoming feel to the film in which we picture a child to be presented. but to our shock we see Brenden a 39 year old man. the atmosphere then turns to an unusual, confused feel to the film opening. then seconds later it changes to non-diagetic music. The music is presented a positive, smooth and the atmosphere created by the music is happy, fun and a sense of safty. This is common music for a comedy. The music is not too loud and is gently faded not so much that you cant hear it, but just enough that you can hear the characters talking.

Titles

The titles are presented in an unusual way. the font of the titles is made to look very childish, as if a child has wrote them. this is because the font isn't neat like an adults hand writing but resembles a child's hand writing. the titles reflect on the protagonists of the film; two 40 year old men who act like children. the colour of the font is just a simple white with a black background, a simple design. this is because the film is a comedy, so it doeskin need to reflect on the genre like a horror film may do or a romance.

Theme

The theme to this film opening is childhood. Both protagonists are presented fluently throughout the film opening as being childish. for example both protagonists craving for more food, their dress sense is of a teenager and they both still live at home with their parents.

By doing this activity it will help me in the creation of my film as it will have to consider all of the things above in depth to be able to constantly and purposely relate back to my film, even the most minute things need to link to my film in order for it to be a success.
