Evaluation 7

There are many differences between my preliminary task and main task, some which were clearer than others. One main difference was the quality of the film. Our preliminary task was filmed at a very low quality, which we filmed with a 5-year-old video camera. This camera gave out a grainy and disorientating look which reflected bad on the film. We improved on this in our final piece by using a new high quality cinematography camera which filmed at 1080p.

           -Main Task

Another big difference was we can see in the preliminary task was the preparation of the filming. This can be seen multiple times in the preliminary task. The first time we can see this is when I appear to be wearing a jacket in one of the camera shots and then the next I am not wearing a jacket.
This was due to poor organisation. As we needed to reshoot some of the shots we didn’t keep tabs on the costumes. The other mistake is when I am sitting down I first am seen behind an open space then in the second shot I am seen behind a table in a separate room. This happened due to the room which we first used, being used. Both could have easily been dodge if we had the time and experience which we have now. These were both avoided in our final product as our organisation and time was well managed. Another big difference between our preliminary task and main is the use of music.   In our preliminary task we didn't include music at all. However, in our main task we included non-diegetic. We added the music to create a romantic atmosphere which would help with our audiences understanding of our film as well as hook them in. By doing this I believe it has shown one of the key improvements from our preliminary task.

Example of costume mistake in preliminary task + no music

Example of use of music in main task

When planning our film opening we had several thing put in place to make sure that when we started filming we knew exactly what to do. We made: A storyboard and a shortlist with the description of the scenes and timing of the shots.
By doing this it helped on our organisation of the filming. It allowed us to film quick and easy. This was unlike our preliminary task where we mostly made what camera shots to use on the spot. This led to us having to reshoot multiple shots.
When researching our genre for our preliminary task, which was action, we did little to none. The only knowledge we had of common conventions of an action was from our general knowledge before studying media. However, this was not the case for our main task. We did extensive research into all three of our genres: RomCom action. Which overall helped us create our film opening. From choosing the title of the film to helping us incorporate our genres into the film.
When making our preliminary task the camera angles we chose to include didn’t have any thought up into them. For example, both characters are shown through a high angle yet this had no significance or meaning behind it.

It showed both characters as vulnerable whereas the white male was supposed to have the power in the scene. When filming our main task, we had more consideration in the chooses in camera angles. For example, the close up on the phone to show that it had a significance in our narrative and the female protagonist seen from a high angle when she answers the phone to show that she hasn’t got the power in the scene and that something mad may happen soon. As well as this we were able to include an eye line match between the two characters. This was mainly due to the practice we had during our preliminary task which enabled us to know how to pull one off.
When we were filming our preliminary task, we found it hard to film the camera angles we wanted to use as we had little experience with a camera before. We found that by first filming our preliminary task it allowed us to get to know how to use a cinematography camera with confidence. However, when filming our main task, when using a boom mic, we weren’t so confidence. This was because it was our first time using one. I believe that if we could go back I would do a practice filming session where we would practice using the camera equipment as it could have made us more confident in using the equipment.

I believe that our final product was successful at creating a two-minute film opening. This was because we included the relevant generic conventions of our chosen genres such as a romantic mood, a sense of danger and the irony of the situation. I believe we successfully made our target audience drawn in and interested into our protagonists as we made them relatable to some extent as well as age relevant. I also believe that our music had an outstanding effect which lasted throughout the opening until the ironic end.
